The building was designed in 1871, according to the neo-Mudejar style by Domènec Balet i Nadal. In 1890 there was a fire and later Pere Bassegoda Mateu rebuilt it.

The building with a ground floor and four floors has a lateral facade that overlooks a small passage and at the end of it was the Spanish Theater.

Pere Llibre i Bas, originally from Cardedeu, was one of the most popular and prestigious confectioners in Barcelona. After working as a clerk in the “La Palma” confectionery, he opened in 1872 his own luxurious confectionery, the “Casa Llibre” in a strategic corner formed by Calle Fernando and Rambla del Centro.
