The Metallurgical Union

The beginnings of the company

Its origins date back to 1885 when Dionisio Bobín Sirot registered a patent for a broom-brush to clean the streets. This invention was born from the workshop that Bobín had in Poblenou, under the name Dionisio Bobín y Cía. In June 1891, two new patents registered in his name seem to mark the definitive beginning of his business career. It was the so-called Bobín system which, in words collected from the patent files, was "a new system for threading and printing metals without shrinkage..."

The business expansion

Later, the Master of Works Domènec Balet y Nadal was asked for a project to build a factory that was completed in 1898.

In 1903, thanks to the association of five investors, the company became La Unión Metalúrgica SA. It was dedicated to the purchase, sale and foundry of materials and objects of iron and other metals.

At the beginning of the 20th century, this and many other factories in Poblenou were denounced because some constructions collided with the then new Cerdà plan. The issue was resolved with the remodeling of the new factory building between 1908 and 1914, carried out by the architect Josep Maria Plantada, which included the construction of naves, roofs and new buildings and the main façade (which today remains ).

At the beginning of the Civil War, the company was established as Collectivity of Workers. Little is known about the activity of the factory in those years, however its specialty suggests a destination for the war industry. Today, the company continues to exist with its old professional activity in another location.
